In the middle ages the abbey produced two types of beer. A strong Belgian beer, reserved for drinking by the fathers and their guests and a lighter (small beer) for the brothers.

This lighter beer was also dispensed to paupers who received beers as an act of charity from the monks. The abbey brewery also played an important function locally with its draff mill providing animal feed from the residues of the beer making process.

Unfortunately, in February 1752 the abbey was completely destroyed by fire with only a few walls of the structure left remaining. However, the monks continued in their charitable works and the brewery was re-established in 1796.

The following years were marked by a progressive decline in the number of monks at the abbey, culminating in the cessation of brewing just before 1850.

Around 1950, Aulne abbey beers became available again, being successfully produced by a number of different breweries.

at Bavery brewery (Couillet)
at Desmedt brewery (Opwijk)
at Amis RĂ©unis brewery (St-Amand les Eaux)

Since june 2000, beer brewing was re-established at the marvellous and picturesque abbey site.

The modern brewery is now installed in the old abbey stables which date from the early 1800's.

The return of the brewery Val de Sambre to the abbey site marked a welcome homecoming for artisan brewing to the area.
